I've been using Copilot for a month or so far it just saves me time by suggesting something I might have found after a minute or so on StackExchange. But this is version 1 of Copilot. The author is absolutely correct: where will Copilot be "two more papers/versions down the line?"

Will we no longer need developers? Of course we will. But will we need as many? No. I'd guess that Copilot has sped up my development by maybe 5% right now. After the next version maybe it jumps to 10%, then 20%.

Copilot, and it's ilk, will change the work life of every developer. You'll either use it to be more productive, or you won't and you'll be obsolete. Not using it would be like a developer refusing to use any opensource packages and instead insisting on writing every line of code for their projects themselves. Good luck with that.
