If I could send only one chapter of this book back in time to myself before launching the RunPee app it would be this one. (Free download: iOS, Android.) In my experience, running a business makes quantum leaps [5] between smooth sailing and oh shit we’re sinking. Both conditions distract us from keeping an eye toward the horizon where we can spot both opportunities and danger. When things go smoothly there’s ample time to look for new opportunities and dangers ahead, but there’s a natural tendency to take a break and enjoy a well-deserved respite from the daily grind. Similarly, when things go poorly there’s only time to batten down the hatches and focus on keeping your business afloat, leaving little time for anything but crisis management.
I’m not saying you should never treat yourself to a well-earned break or ignore problems when they come knocking. I’m saying that during each of those periods, a slice of time needs to be carved out to look toward the horizon. You don’t want to recognize opportunities too late and miss them, or worse yet, discover that a competitor arrived first… You don’t want…
