There is an entire consulting industry devoted to advising companies how to make improvements to their business operations. Individuals who work for these companies, get to know what your business does well, what it does poorly, and everything in between. Then they’ll give you a report highlighting areas for improvement and possibly suggest new opportunities for you to consider. The report may contain helpful feedback that makes a significant difference to your business, or it may lead you down a disastrous path. Everyone’s given advice to others at some point. That’s the way it goes. But you’ll pay a lot for this advice, so hope for the best.

I don’t want to imply that what these people do is a complete waste of time and money — I offer something akin to this service myself [4] — however, before you spend money on any sort of outside consulting there’s something every business should do that’s much cheaper, much simpler, and practically failsafe: listen to your customers.
